Presenting Visit Flanders and Eddy Merckx Cycles

Visit Flanders and Eddy Merckx Cycles Partner with Tour of the Battenkill to Bring Flanders Region and Storied Eddy Merckx Bicycles to US.

February 10, 2014

New York, NY – Anthem Sports – organizer of both the Tour of the Battenkill and the Tour of the Catskills in April and August, respectively – announces a partnership with the legendary Eddy Merckx Cycles and Visit Flanders, the tourist office for Flanders, Belgium.

Eddy Merckx Cycles and Visit Flanders will become the presenting sponsors of the Tour of the Battenkill and the Tour of the Catskills. Both upstate New York cycling events feature several category and age-group races and the popular open race/gran fondo format.

For Eddy Merckx Cycles, the partnership marks the return to the US market – after successfully supporting the 7 Eleven and Motorola cycling teams in the ‘80s and ‘90s. During the races, Merckx will promote its highly anticipated high-end bike, the EMX-525, and its US online home www.eddymerckx.us.

“We’re happy to make our US comeback with these two classics,” said Peter Vanham, US country manager for Eddy Merckx Cycles. “These races have all the classic Merckx features we’re looking for in a race: they’re challenging, selective and tough, but also beautiful and rewarding. We’re looking forward to seeing our bikes and riders take on these races.”

For Visit Flanders, the cooperation is a means to create awareness for the Belgian region as an exciting and – with classic races like the Tour of Flanders – truly historic cycling destination.

“Every year, the best professional cyclists in the world travel to Flanders to compete and defy our cobblestoned country roads,” according to Ben Van Alboom, US product manager for Visit Flanders. There is no reason, however, why amateur cyclists won’t be able to do the same thing, while enjoying the Flemish countryside, visit a couple of Belgian beer breweries along the way, and spend a night in Brussels, Bruges, Ghent or Antwerp to relax.”

Scheduled for April 5-6, the 10th Annual Tour of the Battenkill is North America’s largest Pro/Am road cycling race with more than 3,000 participants from 45 states and 15 countries in 2013.  Styled after spring classics like the century-old Tour of Flanders, the Tour of the Battenkill features several dirt road sections and challenging climbs. Starting and finishing in the small village of Cambridge, NY, category racers and Open Race gran fondo participants will compete on a 65 mile course through the scenic Washington County, NY countryside.

The August 1-3 Tour of the Catskills is in its 7th year and features three days of cycling for both category and open race/gran fondo racers.  The stage race format includes a challenging hill climb on Friday afternoon and two road stages, Saturday and Sunday, culminating with the Sunday finish ascent of the famed ‘Devil’s Kitchen’ climb that was featured in the Tour de Trump professional race in the early 90’s.

Eddy Merckx Cycles was established 30 years ago with a mission to produce the finest cycles in the world. Inspired by its founder and adviser, Eddy Merckx, the company still pursues that goal today. Its US home is www.eddymerckx.us. Contact our country manager at pvanham@eddymerckx.com or 917-215-5788.

Visit Flanders promotes tourism to Brussels, Bruges, Antwerp, Ghent, Mechelen, Leuven and other cities in Flanders.
